Nordic Semiconductor has announced the nRF7002 Expansion Board II, a plug-in board that adds Wi-Fi 6 connectivity to nRF54L Series Development Kits. The board is designed to help developers prototype multiprotocol IoT devices that combine Wi-Fi with an nRF54L Series system-on-chip, using a companion connectivity IC for Wi-Fi functions.
The expansion board is based on the nRF7002 Wi-Fi Companion IC and supports dual-band operation on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 6 features supported include Target Wake Time, orthogonal frequency-division multiple access, and basic service set coloring to improve efficiency and manage interference in dense networks. The board is also backward compatible with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and supports both station and SoftAP operating modes for flexible provisioning and network topologies.
For hardware integration, the board connects to nRF54L Series Development Kits through a dedicated expansion header. Host communication can be implemented over SPI or QSPI, and integrated headers support power measurement workflows for energy-constrained designs. A dual-band chip antenna is included to support operation across both Wi-Fi bands.
Software support is provided through the nRF Connect SDK, including example code and an integrated workflow intended to reduce bring-up time for Wi-Fi-enabled prototypes. Example target applications include smart home and Matter devices, industrial sensors, smart city infrastructure, wearables, and medical devices, where Wi-Fi throughput, network scale, and power consumption need to be balanced.
The nRF7002 Expansion Board II is expected to be available through distribution in Q1 2026, with ordering information available through Nordic Semiconductor sales channels.
