Google has officially introduced Gemini for Home, a sweeping evolution of its smart home platform that replaces Google Assistant on speakers and displays, brings advanced AI intelligence to cameras, and overhauls the Google Home app. The announcement marks what the company calls a “foundational shift” in how AI powers the connected home.
At Google I/O 2025, Google previewed plans to integrate Gemini into the Home APIs. Today, the company is taking that vision further by expanding the platform in two major ways: activating Gemini-powered features for existing smart home devices and launching a new developer program for next-generation AI cameras.
A Gemini Upgrade for Every Smart Device
Through the Works with Google Home program, over 800 million devices are already connected to Google’s ecosystem. Now, all of those devices are gaining Gemini capabilities — unlocking more natural, conversational interactions and enabling users to create complex automations using everyday language.
Developers are being urged to begin testing their existing integrations immediately to ensure a smooth rollout. Google says improved performance tools and reliability metrics will be made available later this year to help partners optimise their device experiences.
Building the Future of AI-Powered Cameras
Google is also expanding its smart home platform to support a new class of AI cameras. The company has launched a dedicated program for camera makers, providing a comprehensive toolkit that includes a hardware reference design, an approved vendor list of components, and a Google Home camera embedded SDK.
The SDK standardises how both Nest and partner cameras process live views and event histories, leveraging a hybrid architecture that combines on-device machine learning with cloud-based intelligence. This enables advanced capabilities like Gemini AI Descriptions and deeper integration across Google’s ecosystem — from smart displays to mobile devices.
The first partner to join the program is Walmart, which will release two new products: the onn Indoor Camera Wired and the onn Video Doorbell Wired. Both offer 1080p live view resolution, intelligent alerts, and full compatibility with Gemini for Home features.
With Gemini now at the core of Google’s smart home strategy, users can expect a more intuitive, connected, and intelligent home experience — one that works seamlessly across devices, brands, and platforms.
