Panasonic Phases Out Appliances, Prioritizes Smart Solutions

Panasonic Holdings has reported its decision to exit the refrigerator and washing machine segment in India, opting to refocus on more profitable and strategically aligned categories. According to an industry report, the Japanese electronics giant will shut down production lines at its Jhajjar, Haryana facility, which has primarily operated as a contract manufacturing unit. While the exact layoff impact is still being assessed, estimates suggest it could reach high double digits, though the company is exploring redeployment options for affected employees.

Going forward, Panasonic will focus its India consumer business on stronger categories, such as televisions and air conditioners. More broadly, the move signals a significant shift in the company’s India strategy—from traditional white goods to future-facing solutions. “In line with our global strategy and evolving market dynamics, we are rebuilding operations in India to focus on growth areas such as home automation, heating, ventilation and cooling, B2B solutions, electricals and energy solutions,” said a Panasonic India spokesperson.

The company has assured that it will fully support dealers in liquidating existing inventory and that all current customers will continue to receive after-sales service, including spare parts and warranty coverage. This realignment reflects a larger global trend of legacy consumer electronics companies pivoting away from low-margin segments to position themselves as technology and solutions providers. For Panasonic, India has now become a critical market for its smart home ecosystem, energy-efficient products, and commercial-grade HVAC systems.
